First Book News Providing New Books to Children in Need

One Million Books in Just Ten Days

First Book staff and volunteers in a Seattle warehouseOne of the things we do at First Book is accept large-scale donations of new books from publishers and make them available to the schools and programs in our national network. As you might imagine, there's a lot involved, so typically we do one of these book distributions every few weeks.

But when the stars align just right - which they did recently - we find that we've got more books than usual on our hands. We had some amazing donations come in from some great publishing partners, like Random House and Disney Publishing Worldwide, so we went all out to distribute over one million books in the course of ten days.

Last week we sent two separate teams of First Book staff and volunteers to warehouses in Minneapolis and Seattle, and this week we'll be on the ground in Milwaukee.

Kids with new books at a First Book event in Minneapolis

One of the best parts of traveling to different cities is getting to meeting some of the local teachers and students who depend on us for new books.

Last week we took a break from packing boxes to visit Hmong International Academy in Minneapolis; several teachers at the school had signed up to receive books for their kids, but we also made sure to bring enough books with us so that every student could have two to take home.

For many of the kids we reach, a new book of their own is a rare treasure, and many of them sat right down and started reading. We see that pretty often, but we never get tired of it.

Honor the Mothers in Your Life

Click here to donate to First Book for Mother's DayIf you're a reader, chances are your mom helped you become one. Mother's Day is Sunday, May 13, and you can honor her, and all the mothers in your life, by giving the gift of reading in her name.

Your gift will provide new books to children in need, and you can send a personalized e-card to let your mom know.
