Giving books to Tucson's neediest children
First Book provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy - access to books.
First Book - Tucson has distributed over 150,000 books to more than 8,000 children, serving over 500 teachers at over 300 different schools and nonprofits. Our local First Book advisory board has raised over $32,000 that is spent on children 0 - 18 here in Tucson and Southern Arizona. We can reach so many children and give out so many books because of the unique arrangement of being a part of a social enterprise; lead by a local grassroots advisory board.
Role in the Community
One in three kids under the age of 18 in Tucson lives in poverty. Statewide, the rate is one in four. Nationwide, it is one in five.
What Can We Do?
First Book - Tucson provides an ongoing supply of new books to children participating in community-based mentoring, tutoring, and family literacy programs helping low-income children, disabled children, and children from military families.
* Elevate the quality of literary programs
* Give teachers the tools they need to enrich the learning experience
* Impart a love of reading to children
* Attract literacy advocates from all sectors of the community to help us acheive these goals
