Celebrating 5 years of books to kids...

First Book provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy access to books. An innovative leader in social enterprise, each year First Book distributes millions of free and low-cost books to disadvantaged children and the programs that serve them.

Since 2007, First Book-Orlando has provided brand-new books to local children in need… more than $500,000 worth!
 
The majority of children living in low-income families do not own a single age-appropriate book.  And 70% of preschool and afterschool programs that serve these children do not have a single book for the children they serve.  

With more than 43,000 Orange-County children living in poverty, this is an issue close to our hearts.  We work to provide book grants to eligible literacy-related programs and Title I schools within Orange County, FL.  (Potential recipient groups, please click “Book Grant Recipients” and “How to Receive Books” at the right.)

Each child served receives a minimum of six books each – enough to start a home library (their very first, for most).  In addition, distribution through eligible programs and schools allows:

1. Children to receive their books in a context of learning, and
2. Programs to increase their literacy efforts and offer new curriculum activities, including parent engagement programs
