Greater Kingsport, TN

Celebrating 10 years of books to kids...

About First Book

First Book provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy access to books. An innovative leader in social enterprise, each year First Book distributes millions of free and low-cost books to disadvantaged children and the programs that serve them.

First Book-Greater Kingsport is an all-volunteer organization formed in 2004 to serve children from low-income families in the Greater Kingsport, Tennessee area. Our focus is on children in kindergarten through high school. We work closely with (Dolly Parton's) Imagination Library of Sullivan County which provides free books in Tennessee to pre-K children.

First Book-Greater Kingsport works through local after school literacy programs and Title I schools to provide free, new books to children of our area who have little or no access to books at home.

Our funding comes from grants and donations from local businesses and individuals.  If you would like to make a donation, you may donate online using the above donation link or send your check to P.O. Box 7488, Kingsport, TN 37664-7488.  Your donation will be credited to First Book-Greater Kingsport.

We are always looking for Advisory Board members and committee members.  If you would like to help us end illiteracy in the Greater Kingsport area, please consider becoming a First Book volunteer.  Send us an e-mail with your contact information and we will contact you.

Book Grant Recipients

First Book-Greater Kingsport has given book grants to many programs in the Greater Kingsport, Tennessee area. A typical book grant lasts for a six month period and offers each child in the program a steady diet of books (usually one book per month), all at no cost to the program. Because program administrators select the titles through the First Book Marketplace, our book grants enable programs — often for the first time — to select books to integrate into curriculum.
